Huw Edwards was born on 18th August 1961, in Bridgend, United Kingdom, where another BBC journalist Susannah Streeter was also born. Born to his father Hywel Teifi Edwards and his mother Aerona Protheroe, he is of Caucasian ethnicity and holds dual nationality (Welsh and British). 

Huw's father Teifi was a Welsh Language activist and plaid Cymru, author and academic research professor of Welsh-language Literature at University College, Swansea.

Whereas, Edwards' mother served as a teacher at Llanelli's Ysgol Gyfun y Strade for thirty years. He also has a sister named Meinir Edwards

Edwards joined Llanelli Boys' Grammar School for early education. Later he attended University College and received his first-class honors degree in French.
